This picture of Lane's Tavern from 1995 gives some perspective on the size of the sign that now hangs at the Lakewood Heritage Center. Not only is it big, but it's animated -- with neon beer slowly filling up the glass and flowing over the top.

Lorde coming to The Fillmore Auditorium

LORDE
Fillmore Auditorium
Saturday, March 22
RECEIVES FOUR GRAMMY NOMINATIONS FOR     ‘RECORD OF THE YEAR’, ‘SONG OF THE YEAR’,        ‘BEST POP SOLO PERFORMANCE’ AND                    ‘BEST POP VOCAL ALBUM’

‘ROYALS’ RULES THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 CHARTS, AT #1 FOR 9 WEEKS

NEW SINGLE ‘TEAM’ IS #1 GREATEST SPIN GAINER ON THE
ALTERNATIVE RADIO CHARTS

Live Nation is pleased to present LORDE at The Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday, March 22. Special guests TBA will open the show. Show time is 8:00 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM.This is an ALL AGES SHOW.

As 2013 closes in, Grammy nominated New Zealander Lorde continues her worldwide reign. Already becoming the youngest artist to write all of her own material and top the U.S Billboard charts, her debut single ‘Royals’ [Lava/Republic Records] remained at #1 for an impressive 9 weeks, topping the charts in an additional 45 countries and selling 7.5 million copies across the globe.

In March, Lorde and her band will be embarking on a 16-date tour across North America which starts in Austin, Texas and winding up on the west coast at the 2,800 capacity Fox Oakland Theater in California.

On December 3rd Lorde released the new video for her follow-up single ‘TEAM’, which is also currently climbing the charts. The concept for the video was realized by Ella herself, as explained on her Facebook and Twitter “(The video) was borne from a dream I had a few months ago about teenagers in their own world, a world with hierarchies and initiations, where the boy who was second in command had acne on his face, and so did the girl who was Queen. I dreamt about this world being so different to anything anyone had ever seen, a dark world full of tropical plants and ruins and sweat. And of this world, I dreamt about tests that didn't need to be passed in order to be allowed in: sometimes the person who loses is stronger.” ‘TEAM’ is currently the #1 greatest spin gainer on the Alternative Radio charts for 3 consecutive weeks now, and climbed to #4 on the iTunes Alternative Singles Chart.

Watch the video for ‘TEAM’:

Her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ [Lava/Republic Records] has already topped most “Year End” lists including Rolling Stone Magazine’s who noted “Lorde's languidly aphoristic lyrics balance rock-star swagger and torqued-up teenage angst”, and The New York Times, who praised “(Pure Heroine) commandeers those wide-open spaces with her lustrous voice and angel-choir harmonies carrying serious thoughts.”

On December 6th, Lorde performed live at the prestigious annual Grammy Nomination Concert and came away with an impressive 4 nominations, ‘Record of the Year’, ‘Song of the Year’, ‘Best Pop Solo Performance’ and ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’.

Lorde, also known as Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, who recently turned 17-years-old back in September, is officially the youngest artist to top the chart since 1987. 'Royals' recently set a new record for "Longest #1 at Alternative Radio by a Female Artist" with a staggering seven weeks at the top.

'Royals' has held the #1 spot at Alternative and AAA radio for seven consecutive weeks, and it has become the #1 greatest gainer at Rhythmic and Hot AC formats. 'Royals' also soared to #1 on the iTunes Overall Top Songs Chart as well as #1 on the Alternative Songs Chart.

As soon as it was released, 'Royals' stirred up a frenzy online. It reached the coveted #1 spot on Hype Machine, and it has racked up over 150 million YouTube/VEVO views.

Last year, she took New Zealand by storm when her self-released, The Love Club EP, rose to #1 on the country's top albums chart.

Christmas on Colfax

Season's greetings. Lakewood police were called to Burger King, 6435 W. Colfax Ave., after a man who had written "Ho Ho Ho" on a restroom stall wall in his own excrement and then had thrown up on the floor was asked to leave by the manager. The man was cited.

Drumroll, please. Lakewood police were contacted by the Regional Transportation District for an assault involving a security officer. Security was sent to a bus stop at West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street after a man boarded a bus and then refused to pay the fare or exit. The man was escorted off the bus, at which point he swung his bag, full of drumsticks, and hit the RTD officer in the shoulder. He was arrested.

Vintage Colfax - Yesterday and Today

In 2013, 40 West Arts presented a two-show collection of Colfax Avenue photos only, which travelled to multiple locations along Colfax, in conjunction with Month of Photography Denver (MoP). The MoP program occurs in every other year, and 40 West Arts will present ‘The 4 Seasons of Colfax” Photography show in March 2015. In 2014, 40 West Arts will present a celebration of what makes Colfax the historical heart of the region, as well as what keeps it so alive and relevant today.

Join 40 West in its 2nd annual Colfax-themed show. 40 West Arts proudly presents Vintage Colfax: Yesterday & Today, an arts exhibition celebrating the history and character of Colfax Avenue (America’s longest commercial street) from yesteryear to the present. We invite visual artists of all kinds—photographers, painters, sculptors, mixed-media artists, etc.—to use their artist’s eye to capture the spectacle that is Colfax—it’s neon, its people, places, events, history and ever-changing character of Main Street Colorado. Colfax Avenue has been at the epicenter of entrepreneurial activity in the metro area for more than 150+ years, and many businesses and buildings are still intact today, many which carry over from the 1950s car culture and related businesses. Come on photographers and artists—channel your inner Jack Kerouac! Get out “On the Road” and experience the grit and the glitz of Colfax. All art forms are welcome. Photos need not be recent; as we welcome historical images too.

KBPI's Low-Dough Show coming to The Fillmore

106.7 KBPI’s LOW-DOUGH SHOW
IN THIS MOMENT
With Special Guests Pop Evil, Devour the Day,  Butcher Babies and All Hail The Yeti
Fillmore Auditorium
January 7                                                                                                        ALL TICKETS JUST $10.67 INCLUDING SERVICE CHARGES!

KBPI and Live Nation are pleased to present IN THIS MOMENT at The Fillmore Auditorium on Tuesday, January 7.   Special guests Pop Evil, Devour the Day, Butcher Babies and All Hail The Yeti will open the show.   Show time is 6:00 PM.  Doors open at 5:30 PM

IN THIS MOMENT are kicking off 2014 with more than a bang – they’re ushering in the new year with THE HELLPOP TOUR II.

IN THIS MOMENT are currently on the road headlining the first leg of their HELLPOP tour.  The tour is being fueled by the band’s continued success at radio, where current single “Whore” sits at #21 at Active Rock formats and is poised to break the Top 20.

“I am so proud and excited for the world to hear ‘Whore’,” says IN THIS MOMENT front woman Maria Brink of her band’s latest single. “The message behind this song is taking back control. It is about taking the power from a disgusting and degrading word and turning it back around on the accuser. It’s about self-empowerment, love and liberation. This is an honest and raw movement that needs to be heard.”

The imagery the band has created around “Whore” is just as provocative: “I decided to pose nude for the visual art for ‘Whore’ to evoke a raw vulnerable emotion. The word WHORE written down my back and the dunce cap symbolize me placing myself on the stake for those who are suffering, and I can only hope to encourage at least one person to find the self-worth and love they deserve to transcend out of a painful situation into a beautiful one. It is about finding our power and taking a stand. We are resilient beings and need to realize our incredible strengths. I will not bow down to others perceptions of me. I will only rise in the name of art, love and music.”

“Whore” is the third single from IN THIS MOMENT’s Century Media Records release ‘Blood’. The album was released in August 2012 and marked the highest debut of the band’s career, entering the Billboard Top 200 at No. 15 and selling more than 20,000 units first week. The record has emerged as one of the bestselling rock albums of the past year, with sales of more than 195,000, and counting.

In This Moment began in Los Angeles in 2005, when Brink and Howorth met at an open jam. Their debut album, Beautiful Tragedy, landed the band on the 2007 and 2008 editions of Ozzfest. Their first collaboration with Kevin Churko came with the release of 2008’s The Dream – earning them a slot on the 2009 Warped Tour. Their third album, A Star-Crossed Wasteland (2010) was their highest-charting album.  With the release of Blood, In This Moment is geared for the next level — as musicians, songwriters and performers.

Benefit for Conscious Alliance Tonight at The Fillmore Auditorium

LETTUCE
Special Guest Kyle Hollingsworth Band
Fillmore Auditorium
Friday, December 13
A Benefit for Conscious Alliance

Live Nation is pleased to present LETTUCE at The Fillmore Auditorium on Friday, December 13. Special guest Kyle Hollingsworth Band will open the show.
Show time is 8:00 PM.  Doors open at 7:30 PM

Celebrating their 20th anniversary as modern day rulers of old school funk, the seven-piece Brooklyn-based juggernaut Lettuce dropped their third studio album Fly—a decidedly raging slab of relentless groove, hyper-charged syncopation and psychedelicized soul anthems. Having blown up stages from coast to coast last year, ranging from The Fillmore in SF to Terminal 5 in NYC, Bear Creek Music Festival to Camp Bisco and all points in-between, Lettuce entered Brooklyn recording studio The Bunker last winter with a fresh batch of road-tested material and a revitalized sound honed razor sharp by a year spent on the road.

“We’re more together and set to crush than ever before,” says drummer and chief songwriter Adam Deitch of the all-star group that he and his accomplished band-mates cut their teeth with back in their Berklee School of Music days. That much history, along with the A-list crop of projects that each member has taken on away from Lettuce, gives the group a bottomless well of musical ideas and unrivaled chemistry—in fact, referring to themselves as a band of brothers. “I was in a practice room at 16 with Kraz, Zoidis, Shmeeans and Deitch and it all clicked,” says “lead” bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes. “We all felt rhythms in similar ways. We were all about the pocket from day one.”

Kyle Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent, with the ability to contribute, collaborate, compose, and communicate on a number of levels and within a vast spectrum of musical environments. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres.

His latest release, titled The There’s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There’s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Vintage Theatre's Got A Brand New Stage!

Opening night of "Young Frankenstein" is being pushed back one week to December 20....
but for a very exciting reason!

Executive Producer and Artistic Director Craig Bond explains, "Vintage Theatre has built a reputation on intimate staging; which we found challenging with the configuration of the Jeffrey Nickelson Auditorium.  Although our long awaited new stage has taken longer to produce than anticipated, we feel that opening a week later will give our audience the improved experience and a heightened look and feel to Young Frankenstein... and beyond. Imagine the theatrics of being able to fly a monster vs. mildly elevating him to face an electric storm."

Bond went on to explain these added benefits:

·         By lowering the stage we eliminated the IBEAM issue and height of 9 1/2 feet. The new higher ceiling elevations allow us to have a scale to the designs that show off the power of dramatic heights and vast length of set.

·         We were able to increase the off stage playing area and wing space allowing us to have larger sets and to have more room to accommodate our bands. Young Frankenstein has a band of 11 players - nearly doubling the size of all other players in musicals to date for a fuller live sound.

·         Dramatic lighting throw will enhance the professional tone and atmosphere of the sets - as we no longer are "cooking the actors" by having lighting so close to their heads.

Vintage Theatre kicks off the 2014 season on December 20 with Mel Brook's hysterical musical "Young Frankenstein." The show runs through February 2, 2014 at Vintage Theatre, 1468 Dayton St., Aurora 80010. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday, December 31at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $31 ($26 advance), Senior, Student, Group discounts available. Scene on Colfax: The Pope

This isn't the first time the Pope was seen on Colfax Avenue...

In 1993, the Pope flew to Denver expressly for a giant World Youth Day rally. While he took time to celebrate Mass with the bishops, to visit Denver's Catholics, the Vietnamese diaspora and the children of Mount St. Vincent Home, he spent his biggest chunks of time with WYD's instant community. Those assembled showered John Paul II with a love expressed in hugs, tears, cheers and applause.

On Thursday, August 12, 1993, his first day in Denver, a full house of 90,000 welcomed the pope at Mile High Stadium, a welcome also marked by a late evening rainbow. On Friday, he spoke briefly by remote hookup to conclude the Stations of the Cross. On both Saturday and Sunday, he spent nearly four hours with youth at Cherry Creek State Park.

A statue of Pope John Paul II, designed by Polish sculptor Jacek Osadczuk, was installed outside the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, at the corner of Logan Street and Colfax Avenue, on April 2, 2009, the fourth anniversary of the pontiff's death, and dedicated on May 17, 2009. The statue commemorates the event of Pope John Paul II holding mass at the cathedral for World Youth Day on August 13-14, 1993.

The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is home to the Archdiocese of Denver. The cathedral building, designed by Detroit architect Leon Coquard in the French Gothic Style, was constructed from 1902-1911 with a final cost of approximately $500,000. Influenced by the the 13th century coll├ęgiale Saint-Nicolas of Munster, Moselle, France--the birth village of bishop Nicholas Chrysostom Matz, who supervised its construction--the cathedral is made of Indiana limestone and Gunnison, Colorado granite and features two 210-foot spires. Its inaugural mass was held on October 27, 1912 and consecration in 1921. The cathedral was raised to the status of minor basilica on Christmas Day, 1979--one of only 29 American Cathedrals with that title.

Mayfair Center Renovation on Tap

Mayfair Center Redevelopment - Artist Rendering
Highlights:
  • Key retail center in Mayfair being redeveloped.
  • Chair Five Equities owns Mayfair Center at 14th and Krameria.
  • One new tenant already is on board.
Chair Five Equities LLC plans to invest $2.25 million to restore the Mayfair Center at East 14th Avenue and Krameria Street to its former glory. In recent years, the 11,700 square-foot center had been ignored and fallen into disrepair. Chair Five Equities purchased the property in late 2012. In the past, the center’s tenants have included the Bagel Deli, Baskin Robbins, the Hair Bender and Milt’s Fine Meats.

“There are many reasons why this purchase and redevelopment make sense,” said Jamie Harris, managing member of Chair Five Equities.  “The more we looked at the community and the property, the more our improvement plans grew.”

He said it quickly became apparent that it would take a larger investment that was initially planned and it was needed “sooner rather than later,” to “benefit the neighborhood and add to the property’s success.”

Mayfair is becoming increasingly trendy and a derelict building won’t provide the draw for tenants that want to be in the neighborhood, he said. Mayfair is one of the hottest housing markets in Denver at this time, according to CoHomefinder.com. The median for sale price of a home is $350,000 and with some homes priced just under $1 million.

“The Mayfair neighborhood is on the rise and we can’t attract the kind of tenants the neighborhood wants with the property in its current condition,” Harris said.  “The bones of the center are in good shape, it’s just tired and needs a lot of help.”

The center is being designed as a place where people can come to eat, shop, and have a conversation with their neighbors.
Some of the improvements include:
    • The installation of a large pedestrian sidewalk with patios that will replace the dated smaller walkways in front of the shops;
    • Benches and bike racks will be integrated into the design to enhance the shopping experience;
    • A new two-foot high illuminated design band will follow the 1960’s era roofline;
    • All of the individual tenant signage will be located on a new sign framework that will provide greater visibility for all of the businesses.
    • The entire parking lot will be replaced and re-striped in December.
The project will create an estimated 40 jobs upon completion.

“This is a catalyst project for the Mayfair Town Center area,” said Hilarie Portell, executive director of the Fax Partnership. “It’s aligned with the community vision, eliminating blight and strengthening connections with surrounding neighborhoods. We look forward to organizing events there and attracting more new investment.”

The property is being leased by Jeff Germain of the Crosby Real Estate Group. The center can accommodate tenants from 605 square feet to 1,816 square feet. Germain already has landed the first tenant, the Garlic Knot. The family oriented, full-service Italian restaurant wants to take advantage to the site’s proximity to a King Soopers and a Safeway.

“It’s a great location,” said Joe Giampietro, owner of the Garlic Knot, which will have indoor dining, take outs, and provide deliveries of what he calls the best pizza and pasta in Denver. It is scheduled to open in the spring.

The cast includes Jeremy Palmer (George Bailey), Lyndsay Palmer (Mary [Hatch] Bailey), Trenton Schindele (Clarence), Michael Leopard (Mr. Potter), Jaime Lewis (Uncle Billy) along with Eddie Blackshere, Lily Blessing, Noal Blessing, Tammy Davidson, Everett Ediger, Harper Ediger, Cassie Ferro, Donna Gunnison, Twanna Latrice Hill, Ashley Kelashian, Kim Jackson, Amber Marsh, Edric Richerson, Eric Richerson, Lucy Roucis, Daniel Traylor, Shannon Wilson, David Wright and Lisa Young.
When asked about his choice of this show Artistic Director Steve Wilson said, "The great power of the story of It's a Wonderful Life rests upon the central notion of the tremendous value of each individual contribution to the fabric of our human journey. When George Bailey considers ending his life and is shown the deep impact of his existence, we are all forced to ponder our own impact upon the world. The Phamaly Theatre Company is made up of performers who might believe on any given day that they don't have such a wonderful life, and yet their contribution to the beauty and diversity of our community is immense. The very existence of our company and the presentation of this production highlights the extraordinary value they offer each and every day. While the iconic film version has us weeping each year during the holidays, our Live Theatre production brings an authenticity and electricity to this quintessential American story about the complexity, beauty and value of life."
Audio Description and Sign Language Interpretation will be provided on Sunday, December 15 with a post-show talk back. Phamaly will also offer a backstage sensory tour at 11:00a.m. The sensory tour brings individuals on stage for a tactile experience, touching elements of the set, costumes, and prop pieces. The tour is free but advance reservations are required by calling the Phamaly office at 303-575-0005 (lunch will not be provided).
Tickets for the Aurora Fox performances on sale now, are $29 adult, $25 for groups of 10 or more; $15 all seats preview December 5 and 6. The performance on Monday, December 16 is $25. Please call 303-739-1970 or purchase online at www.phamaly.org.

      UMPHREY’S MCGEE

      Fillmore Auditorium
      December 28, 29 and 31 (New Year’s Eve)

“You are cordially invited to join superlative rock 'n' roll outfit UMPHREY’S MCGEE in concluding our 15 Year Anniversary Celebration and ring in 2014 at the beautiful and historic Fillmore Auditorium”

      Umphrey's McGee
Live Nation is pleased to present UMPHREY’S MCGEE at The Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday, December 28, Sunday, December 29 and New Year’s Eve – Tuesday, December 31. Special guests TBA will open the show.   Show time is 8:00 PM.  Doors open at 7:00 PM

Umphrey's McGee headlined the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Friday, June 7 for the fourth consecutive year and what a stellar night it was!  Fans who have followed Umphrey's McGee for any period of time know that there are only two guarantees: you never know what you’re going to get and Umphrey’s always delivers.

How else can a band be relentlessly innovative in both music AND fan relations for 15 years?  Umphrey's McGee has built a stellar reputation based on marathon concerts that mix original, technically demanding tunes with complex epics and playful covers (ranging from Toto to Metallica).  In their most recent studio release, Death By Stereo, it has chosen the same kind of attention to melody, songcraft, and musicianship that make those artists stand apart. Umphrey’s chemistry, however, is something all its own, built upon a relentless live schedule of 100-plus shows a year, a solid base of musical training and friendships that go back to when they walked in the shadows of the Golden Dome at the University of Notre Dame.

Umphrey's McGee plays for crowds from all over the US and beyond, and incorporates a sophisticated mix of cutting-edge technology, including a stellar light show. Its Stew Art concerts redefine live music as we know it, with fans texting to choose the direction of the band’s set, while the four-quarter UMBowls (each quarter has a different interactive theme) have quickly become landmark events not to be missed.

Umphrey’s tight-knit relationship with its rabid fan base includes the band making recordings available of every live show since 2006, monthly podcasts, an extremely active presence on Facebook and Twitter, and digital “Easter Egg” hunts. This has led to a strong following throughout the U.S. and to successful international tours of Europe, Australia and Japan.

Home to one of one of the band's first successful tours outside of the comforts of their Midwestern circuit in the early years, Colorado has always welcomed Umphrey's McGee with open arms and this run will be no exception!
